The Online Harms Bill in Canada
Actions that you need to take immediately. It has already passed first reading.
The blogosphere is flooded right now with discussions about this bill, which is being pushed in the Canadian House of Commons with inadequate discussion, gaslighting and lies. Everyone needs to put their MP on notice that this bill should not go any further.
Check out Meghan Murphy’s conversation with John Carpay here. If this bill continues through to Second, then
Third Reading and the Senate, it will effectively end free speech in Canada. Some of the measures in this bill include:
anonymous complaints can be lodged against anyone for alleged “hate speech”
anonymous complaints can be lodged on the basis that someone thinks someone might commit so-called hate speech (of course hate speech is not defined)
there’s incentives for reporting, these anonymous complainants will get $20,000 when they win a judgment against an individual
there’s also the threat of $50,000 in fines, drug and alcohol monitoring, house arrest and life imprisonment.
I’m not making this up. This bill is ushering Canada into complete fascism and totalitarianism.
Here’s a petition the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms has created.
